Braces treatment is widely common for orthodontic patients. Today there are many equitable options, including traditional metal braces, inconspicuous clear or tooth-colored braces, and clear aligners – a relatively new option for adults and teens. Orthodontic patients now have more options than ever.

Metal braces / Traditional braces

Traditional metal braces are by far the most common type of fixed braces still to this day. Comprised of high-grade stainless steel with metal bands that wrap around the back molars, as well as small metal brackets that are cemented to the front of teeth and a thin metal wire that gently guides teeth into proper position.

Why does this option continue to be the most commonly used? They are sturdy, durable, and practical. Though somewhat different to the metal braces of the past, today's are smaller, lighter and more comfortable to wear. You can even get decked out and add colorful elastics to your braces for a really fun and special look.

Ceramic Braces

Clear ceramic braces are a newer and pretty popular option among adults because they offer a less noticeable look. These braces use the same components as traditional braces with one major difference – the brackets on the front side of the teeth are made of translucent ceramic material that blends in with the tooth's natural color.

Keep in mind that the elastic bands around ceramic braces Elastic bands around ceramic braces can become less durable and more noticeable when stained…but are generally changed monthly. Ceramic braces are more expensive than metal braces, but many patients openly welcome the cost for a more inconspicuous look.

Lingual Braces

There is an even more subtle and low-key look: lingual braces. This option works in the same way that metal braces do, but their placement is somewhat different. Placed on the tongue-side of the teeth, lingual braces generally require more time to get use to and they may prolong treatment. These braces cost significantly more than standard braces, however, these tradeoffs may not be a deal breaker for you if "invisible" is the look you want.

Removable Aligners

Another alternative to fixed orthodontic appliances is a very unique option known as removable aligners. Removable clear aligners are a series of clear plastic "trays" that fit over your teeth, each one moving your teeth a little bit until they are in the proper position.

After a thorough examination at our Wall, NJ dental office, your dentist will help you choose the best treatment option.
